The supplement vitamin industry is worth $39 million USD and continues its growth. A quarter of American adults, and 70% of older Americans ages 71+, use a vitamin. Around one-third of them take a multivitamin tablet.  But does this really make sense?
Certain nutrients may cause diseases. Good health requires that you eat the majority of the nutrients required. Some people have trouble eating a healthy diet. According to the National Academy of Medicine criteria, Americans do not get adequate levels of certain vitamins or minerals.
As an example, 90% of Americans get less vitamin and mineral requirements than the estimated average. Older people are more at risk of poor food intake because they have trouble chewing and swallowing. They also have problems absorbing. Folate, a vitamin B, is essential for pregnant women. It can help reduce the likelihood of having a baby with spina-bifida, or anencephaly. Folate must be taken within the first few week of conception.
This is usually before a woman even knows she’s pregnant. Unplanned pregnancies account for half of all pregnancies in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all women who are pregnant (age 15 to 45), consume 600 mg of folic acids per day.  These and other nutrients are essential for pregnancy.
Proton pump inhibitions, which are prescribed for acid reflux or heartburn, can block the absorption vitamin B12 as well as calcium and magnesium. Parkinson’s disease treatment can decrease the absorption of carbidopa (levodopa) and carbidopa (carbidopa).
Multivitamins come as tablets, capsules or liquids in a variety of forms.
Supplements are a multibillion pound industry. There are many designer labels available from which brands can choose. __S.24__ Look for one with the Recommended Daily Limitations and the US Pharmacopeia (USP), seal of approval. This seal guarantees that the ingredient and amount listed on the label is contained in the capsule.
The USP also performs several tests that verify the pill is free from pesticides or heavy metals. The USP can offer suggestions to increase your food intake and/or prescribe supplemental vitamins if necessary. __S.28__
